Yoga mini-training:
Anatomy, alignment and asanas
A 12-hour weekend intensive for yoga students and teachers.
An interactive (and fun) look at individual anatomy, intentional alignment, and the ins and outs of some of yoga’s most common postures.
Yoga alignment is about as one-size-fits-all as the slippers they give you at the spa.
By the end of the weekend, you’ll be able to personalise your asana practice with confidence - no more micromanaging your movements, following outdated alignment cues, or forcing yourself into shapes that are really uncomfortable.

That disconnect - between what I was being told to do and what my body was experiencing - is what this training is all about.
When I started geeking out about anatomy, my whole approach to asana changed.
And that shift is exactly what I’m going to share with you over the weekend.
What you’ll learn
-
Learn how things the length of your arms, shape of your spine, or structure of your hip sockets, impacts the way asanas feel and function for you. You’ll finally accept that sometimes it’s your skeleton (not your skill) that determines which shapes are possible - and which ones won’t be.
-
Learn to differentiate between various sensations such as tension and compression. Understand why it matters, what it means, and how to adapt accordingly.
-
Move away from binary beliefs like right/wrong or good/bad, and embrace an “it depends” approach to alignment. You’ll see that “it depends” isn’t a cop-out - it’s actually the most intelligent answer.
-
Adapt your alignment to match your intention. If you don’t know why you’re doing a pose, you won’t know how to do it.
-
Apply cool movement and neuroscience principles to recognise habits, reduce repetitive strain, and practice with more presence.
-
Debunk common alignment myths so you know which cues are helpful, which ones to question, and what to focus on instead.
-
Use alignment to enhance the internal experience of an asana, not the external shape, or what looks best on Instagram.

That was the shift that took me from a yoga instructor, to a yoga teacher.
This workshop will help you achieve similar shifts - whether you’re a student who follows the rules, or a teacher who still relies on them.
What makes this training different?
✔
No Latin lists or boring lectures
You’ll get clear explanations in plain English. No memorising random muscle names you’ll just forget by Monday.
✔
Applied, not abstract
Everything is linked back to real asanas, real bodies, and real movement. If you can’t use the information on your mat, it’s useless.
✔
The power of “it depends”
You’ll leave with the ability to make your own choices, and the confidence to personalise your practice in a way that works for you.
✔
Embodied learning
This is an interactive weekend with plenty of movement and playtime - not hours of sitting and listening.
✔
It’s fun
I believe that learning is more effective in a lighthearted environment. There are no tests, no trick questions, and no stupid answers.
This weekend is for you if…
✔
You’re interested in alignment cues.
Where they come from, what they really mean, and if it’s actually good advice.
✔
You’ve ever felt confused by contradictory advice.
When one teacher says this, but another says that.
✔
The common cues aren’t working.
Hands under shoulders and knees at 90 degrees are your default (even though they don't feel good), and your low back is sore, despite always engaging your core.
✔
You’ve hit a wall.
Certain things, like stepping your foot between your hands, or holding your heels in Camel, feel impossible no matter how hard you practice.
✔
You’re curious about anatomy.
And enjoy little aha! moments and lightbulb level understanding.
✔
You’re a yoga teacher who wants to make a difference.
You know yoga is for everybody, but you’d love some extra support to make it accessible for every body. Don’t worry, I’ve got you!
But it’s not for you if…
✘
The thought of breaking the rules brings you out in a rash.
Full disclosure: we’ll do Warrior 1 with wonky hips and Chair pose with an un-tucked tailbone. You’ve been warned.
Here’s an overview of everything we’ll cover together…
The training combines interactive lectures, thoughtful discussions, and plenty of playtime on your mat.
Rather than looking at each topic in isolation, the theory and application will overlap and complement each other throughout the weekend.
The topics
-
Learn the key anatomical terms (hip flexion, spinal rotation etc).
The shape of your skeleton: bones, joints and body proportions.
Biomechanics: why it’s helpful, but why it isn’t the whole picture.
The SAID principle: why alignment is always changing.
-
Active and passive range of motion and why it matters.
Engagement, co-contraction and action cues: especially helpful for hypermobile folks.
Habits, patterns, and neural plasticity: the pros and cons of autopilot.
Repetition and variety: balancing the “new” and “knew” for maximum brain-body benefits.
-
The what, where, when, how, and (most importantly) the why.
Embracing an “it depends” attitude based on different intentions.
Emphasising engagement, instead of aesthetics and angles.
Prioritising the internal experience, not just the external shape.
-
A deep dive into poses, postures, and props.
Options, variations and intelligent choices: there’s no one “right” way.
Common cues Q+A: real answers to your specific questions.
Questions?
-
No. This training is specifically designed for both yoga students and teachers. The information is relevant for everyone, regardless of whether you teach.
-
As long as you have a desire to learn, you’re welcome to join.
You’ll get the most out of this training if you have an existing practice and some prior experience, but if you’re new-ish to yoga and keen to dive in from the start, then it would be wonderful to have you there.
-
There’s plenty of movement, exploration, and time on the mat - but it’s balanced with discussions, Q+As, and short lectures. It’s much more of an interactive weekend workshop, not an extended asana practice or bunch of guided classes.
-
This training isn’t therapy, treatment, or medical advice. It will give you the tools to understand your body, reduce unnecessary strain, and make more sustainable choices.
-
Very. Many experienced practitioners find this kind of work especially clarifying because it helps undo unhelpful habits.
-
Not at all. Everything is explained in an easy-to-understand way and immediately explored through movement. This way the theory “comes to life” and makes sense on your mat. If you do have anatomy experience, this will help you apply that knowledge in a more practical, yoga-specific way.
-
Yes. Everything we cover is applicable to all styles of yoga. It’s body specific, not style specific.
-
Don’t worry - while there will be some theory and discussion sessions, we break it up with interactive exercises, playtime, and plenty of movement.
-
Yes - in fact, you’ll be an asset to the group. This workshop is specifically about moving away from "standard" shapes and finding what works for the individual. Your unique experience will help us all learn more about the diversity of movement. Just let me know ahead of time so I can make sure you’re supported.
-
The idea of being "good" at yoga is one of the dogmas we’re here to dismantle. Whether you’re new-ish to yoga, a seasoned teacher, or somewhere in between, you’re welcome to take part. The topics we’re covering apply to you regardless of your "level” or experience.
-
Not at all. I’m anti-dogma, not anti-alignment. Alignment is awesome, but only when it’s used in the right way. My goal is that by the end of the weekend you’ll be able to make anatomically informed choices about which alignment cues are applicable (and beneficial) for your body, as well as each individual practice - this changes depending on what you want to get out of it.
